The company makes instruments that light the inside of surgical incisions.
San Francisco, Calif.-based Invuity will have a booth at this year’s 80th annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), debuting its Eigr Saber Waveguide with Yankauer suction. The company’s line of Eigr products are lighted surgical devices designed to illuminate orthopedic surgeries better inside the incision. Yankauer suction is the most commonly used surgical suction instrument in world, used to clear a surgical site of fluids such as blood that may flood the area and obscure a surgeon’s vision. The Eigr Saber Waveguide with Yankauer is a next-generation surgical device that combines hand-held illumination and Yankauer suction. According to the company, it has a low-profile design in order to provide surgeons with the ability to better visualize in small surgical cavities, both in minimally invasive or open surgeries. The device is designed for use in general orthopedic and orthopedic trauma surgeries including total hip replacement procedures and pelvic fracture fixation. The Eigr line of devices is touted to produce a bright, cool-toned light that eliminates shadows, glare and minimizes thermal hazards. The Saber Waveguide also comes in two-tip configurations, and has an attachable pistol grip handle. “We have seen very strong adoption of our initial Saber device, the Eigr Saber with Frazier suction configuration for spinal procedures,” said Philip Sawyer, CEO of Invuity. “Orthopedic surgeons have been asking for a device like this—hand-held illumination on a larger suction platform. The Eigr Saber Waveguide with Yankauer model now expands our Saber line and brings the benefits of our Eigr illumination technology to a broader range of procedures and specialties.” Last year, Invuity closed $25 million in series D funding to expand the development, manufacture and commercialization of the company’s products. The funding was led by Valence Advantage Life Sciences Fund II, which is run by the team that also manages the Caxton Advantage Life Sciences Fund. Existing investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and InterWest Partners also participated in the financing round, along with Wexford Capital.
